Kitty Hawk Kites Gets Loopy: Hang Glider Looping Contest Upcoming

Kitty Hawk Kites, Inc. was founded in 1974 by John Harris, a pioneer in hang gliding, to provide instruction, products, and service to the burgeoning new sport. Centered in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Kitty Hawk Kites has been a pioneer developer of hang gliders, hang gliding instruction, aerotowing and spectacular events such as the, ahhh, Spectacular!

The oldest continuous Hang Gliding Competition in the world, this years 31st Spectacular will include skydiving, paragliding, ultralights and more. The competition begins the 17th on the sand dunes of Jockey's Ridge. Demonstrations, aerotow competition, street dance and awards ceremonies are all features of this spectacular event. Annual inductions to the Rogallo Hall of Fame will occur Sunday.

This year's event will include a hang glider looping contest for the first pilot to complete 100 sequential loops. This is a reasonable goal as the existing record is 96. A strong contender is Chad Elchin who is a well known hang glider pilot, school owner and instructor. Along with the loop contest, there will be a display of Perris Williams' hang glider aerobatic routines, for which he is famous.
