Gus McLeod To Speak At AirVenture

Will Address July 30th Moth Dinner

Gustavus (Gus) McLeod now has two dates at this year's AirVenture in Oshkosh (WI). In addition to talking about his next pole-to-pole, 'round-the-world venture, McLeod will also address this year's Moth Dinner at Oshkosh, Friday July 30, 6:30 PM at the Pioneer Inn.

McLeod has already made aviation history in 2000 by flying an open cockpit airplane, a 1939 PT Stearman, to the North Pole, which was documented by a National Geographic Special titled "Arctic Flyer," and the subject of his book, Solo to the Top of the World: Gus McLeod's Daring Record Flight (Smithsonian Institution Press, 2003).

Gustavus "Gus" McLeod will be flying around the world pole to pole in a single engine aircraft known as the "Firefly" for a new world aviation record later this year -- perhaps in August or September.

The Firefly is an experimental aircraft designed by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute. McLeod is flying around the world pole to pole on behalf of the Tuskegee Airmen, Women Air Force Service Pilots, and Women in Military Service for America. McLeod is also flying for a world aviation record in order to get middle school children interested in aviation and the sciences.

By training he is a chemical engineer and used to work for the CIA. He is the first civilian aviator since Amelia Earhardt to have been nominated for a Distinguished Flying Cross. Congress will consider his nomination this year.
