Apache Down in Korea

No Survivors This Time

On a soggy hillside some 50 miles east of Seoul, South Korea, recovery efforts continue, in the aftermath of a US Apache AH-64A attack helicopter's crash early Thursday morning.

The chopper had taken off from Camp Page (Cuncheon, SK), and was lost for more than a day, in heavy fog and rain.

Pending results of the investigation, all Army Apaches were grounded.

No civilians were injured; but pilot, 1st Lt. Dustin Shannon, 23, of Vassar (MI); and Chief Warrant Officer James Wallenburg, 40, from Fort Walton Beach (FL), were found dead at the scene Friday afternoon.

Both men are from are from B Troop, 1st Battalion, 6th Cavalry Brigade.

The helicopter was on a flight to Camp Eagle at Wonju, about 55 miles southeast of Seoul; early reports had said it was headed to Camp Humphreys at Pyongtaek, south of the capital.

The helicopter is an earlier version of the AH-64D Longbow Apache that went down August 1, north of Thursday's crash site; both pilots in that incident were rescued OK.
