Pilot Arrested For Flying While Intoxicated In SD

Chairman Of IL Town's Airport Authority Also A Retired Pharmacist

A retired pharmacist and head of his local airport authority is in hot water with authorities in Mitchell, SD after allegedly flying drunk.

Mitchell police tell The Associated Press they arrested Robert Powless, 65, after he landed Tuesday at the Mitchell Municipal Airport (MHE). Air traffic controllers told police Powless was flying erratically, and slurring his speech.

When officers gave Powless a breath test at the airport, he blew "well over the .08 threshhold for DUI," according to WJDB radio.

Adding insult to injury, Powless is a retired pharmacist... and chairman of the Flora (IL) Airport Authority.

Police also found several bottles of prescription pills onboard the plane -- which Powless reportedly had no prescriptions for -- and an open bottle of liquor. His ticket has been suspended, pending an FAA investigation.

Powless told police he was in South Dakota on a pheasant-hunting trip.
