NTSB: Air Ambulance Was Too Low

Question Now Is, Why?

It is by no means a final determination, but NTSB investigators now have more to go on in the crash of an air ambulance near the California border with Mexico.

Instead of flying at more than 5,000 feet MSL, according to the safety board, the Med Flight Air Ambulance Lear was flying at just 2,300 feet. Why, however, is reason for intensive study of the plane's cockpit voice recorder.

Lost in the accident were:

  • pilot Karl A. Kolb, age 56
  • co-pilot K. John Lamphere, 30
  • nurse Laura A. Womble, 47
  • paramedic Donald Womble, 45
  • paramedic Marco E. Villalobos, 33

The accident was the first crash for Med Flight since the Albuquerque-based company was founded in 1979.
