Napolitano Hammered On Cuts To FFDO Program

Blogger Notes Selective Application Of Risk-Based Criteria

In a blog post on RedState.com, Brian Darling describes a testy exchange, before the House Homeland Security Committee, between US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Minnesota Republican Chip Cravaack, a former airline pilot. The issue was the Obama administration's proposed 50 percent cut in funding for the Federal Flight Deck Officers Program.

Cravaack reportedly pressed the question of whether the secretary believes an armed pilot is the last line of defense on an airline flight. Darling says she responded, "The reduction for the Federal Flight Officer Program is predicate on the fact that it is not risk based. And to have an FFDO just, you know, whether somebody is on a flight or not and we are moving in the TSA to risk based systems and those are the ones we are going to put money into."

Darling notes that this "risk-based" premise apparently includes patting down screaming three-year-olds, forcing a 95-year-old Florida woman to remove her adult diaper, and detaining Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, all incidents reported recently.
