STEREO Launch Is Music To NASA's Ears

Twin Satellites Sent Into Orbit Without A Hitch

ANN REALTIME REPORTING 10.25.06 2315 EDT: NASA's STEREO mission to investigate solar storms got off to a spectacular start Wednesday night, as the rocket carrying the twin satellites blazed through the starry sky after lifting off at 8:52 pm EDT from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

The Boeing Delta II rocket reportedly performed without a hitch... with all mission parameters hit on cue. Both spacecraft are now on their way to investigating the origin of special solar storms erupting from the sun.

Known as "coronal mass ejections," these storms travel at nearly 1 million miles-per-hour... and can knock out power on the ground.

The rocket is delivering the STEREO spacecraft to opposite sides of Earth, where they will then map the structure of the storms in 3D as they leave the sun and flow around the planet.
