NTSB: Planes That Collided Over SF Bay Engaged In Passing Maneuver

Wreckage Found Tuesday Using Underwater Cameras

The two airplanes involved in a mid-air collision over San Francisco Bay Sunday were engaged in a "passing maneuver," according to an NTSB investigator on the scene.

The NTSB's Howard Plagens said at a briefing Monday that the pilot of the Hawker Sea Fury heard a "thump" after the two airplanes passed, and he immediately began to concentrate on landing his own airplane safely. Television station KPIX reports that the Sea Fury pilot told Plagens that he saw the Cessna 210 going down, but did not see it impact the water.

The Associated Press reports that divers located the wreckage of the Cessna 210 about 1600 PDT Tuesday. Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office Spokesman Jimmy Lee said that the SF Police Department had located the wreckage using an underwater camera, and divers had been sent down to confirm it was the accident airplane.

Salvage operations were set to begin Wednesday.
