The Check Is No Longer In That Mail

Postal Service Pulls US Airways', AA's Mail Shipments

The US Postal Service has decided to suspend all shipments of US mail through US Airways Group, Inc. The reason? They couldn't deliver it on time.

A five-month analysis of the delivery statistics resulted in the decision to call of the shipments of first class mail through the airline after the data showed a consistent pattern of late deliveries.

US Airway's was not the only one caught in that net. American Airlines also lost its mail shipments for the same reason, according to statements made to the USPS to the Wall Street Journal.

David Castelveter, spokesperson for US Airways, declined to discuss how much money the airline will lose due to this decision. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics, however, has public information that says the airline made over $6 million in gross profits by carrying mail through 1Q04 through 3Q04.

Castelveter did say that airline officials working with the US Postal Service to resolve the delivery issues that have plagued the airline since it began carrying mail in June 2003.
