Remote Piloting System For Helicopters Tested

Aurora Flight Sciences Develops Option For Traditional Helos

A remote piloting system developed by Aurora Flight Sciences was recently tested by the company.

The Autonomous Aerial Cargo/Utility System is a kit that can be installed on a full-scale rotary-wing aircraft which will allow it to be flown with little human assistance into and out of remote and challenging landing zones.

The website Defenseworld.net reports that the test was conducted using a Bell 206 helicopter on May 26th. The aircraft was flown around Bealeton, VA, according to Pentagon sources.

The AACUS sensor package gives pilots the ability to control the aircraft via an app on a military tablet. Marine Capt. Christopher Alfaro said that the kit could be put on any aircraft "and as long as we don the science and engineering on it, it can fly autonomously."

Over the next two years, Aurora will test the AACUS on a UH-1H Huey helicopter, according to the report. The goal is to implement the technology into the Marine Corps sometime in 2018.
