London Biggin Hill Airport To Mark 80th Anniversary Of The Battle Of Britain

Fighting Helped Determine The Course Of World War II

A unique public event on August 18, 2020 will commemorate the 80th anniversary of The Battle of Britain, the first campaign of WWII to be fought entirely in the air.

Flightline UK reports in its Airshow News that Biggin Hill played a significant role in the battle, which culminated on August 18 ... a day that has since become known to history as "The Hardest Day". On that day, the German Luftwaffe made an all-out effort to destroy the RAF Fighter Command.

The airport is now striving to become London's preeminent full-service business aviation airport, according to airport officials, and a leading center for aviation technology and enterprise. Next year will see the airport taking major strides towards that goal with the development of an Aerospace Technology College, and a four-star hotel will be under construction at the site.

"These significant infrastructure projects will have an impact on the airport's ability to stage the Festival of Flight in 2020," said David Winstanley, CEO of London Biggin Hill Airport. "We are well underway in our preparation for a spectacular public event along with other commemorative events that will honor those who served in The Battle of Britain during the 80th anniversary year here at the most famous of all the Royal Air Force fighter stations."
