Firefly Downed At UK Air Show

Two On Board Killed

It's tough to watch someone die. Even if it's on videotape. Not only did a Fairey Firefly performing aerobatics at Britain's Imperial Museum annual Flying Legends show crash Saturday, it crashed in front of thousands of people and on camera for millions more to see.

The Sunday Herald reports the aircraft, built in 1949 and just recently refurbished, carried a pilot and a navigator from the Royal Navy's historic flight section. The victims' names haven't been released. Graham Boyd, an employee of the video company shooting the air show, told the Herald, "It went into a rolling movement. The pilot appeared to be struggling to regain control, but didn't have enough height to recover."

The Firefly was part of a fleet of warbirds stationed at RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset, England. The fatal crash comes just two days after the last flying Heinkel HE-111 went down on approach to Cheyenne (WY), killing both members of the Arizona Wing of the Commemorative Air Force who were taking the rare bomber to an air show in Missoula (MT).
