Idaho Man Charged For Using A Helicopter For Hunting

Was Attempting To Retrieve A Dead Elk From A Wilderness Area

Charges have been filed against Idaho Falls businessman Doyle Beck for allegedly using a helicopter for hunting.

The Post Register newspaper reports that Beck and two other men allegedly used the aircraft in September to retrieve a dead elk from the Eighteen Mile wilderness area. Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Sarah Wheeler said that the case did not involve anyone shooting from the aircraft, but the operation of motorized vehicles is not allowed in the area. Landing in such an area carries a possible fine of up to $100,000 and a year in prison.

Beck has been charged with the unlawful use of a helicopter in hunting game. That charge carries a six-month prison sentence. He is also charged with aiding in a misdemeanor, which can result in up to a year in jail. He has pleaded innocent to both charges, and demanded a jury trial.

The charges against the person he allegedly assisted in the misdemeanor have been dropped by authorities. That person was charged with unlawful use of a helicopter in hunting game. The case was dismissed in March.

While the incident occurred last fall, authorities delayed filing charges until the Idaho Department of Fish and Game concluded an investigation. The FAA is also investigating the incident, according to the report.

Beck is the former chairman of the Bonneville County GOP. He is described as a local businessman and "political activist".
