Thieves Steal Jet Engines From Israeli AFB

Eight Engines Removed From Tel Nof Near Tel Aviv

The Israeli military is investigating the theft of eight F-15 and F-16 engines from the Tel Nof air base near Tel Aviv, though the military will admit through a spokeswoman only that "parts" were taken.

The Maariv newspaper reported that "parts" stolen were entire engines. Each of the powerplants weighs several thousand pounds, and they were reportedly no longer usable in aircraft. The paper said they most likely had been taken for their value as scrap.

Still, getting the engines off the base would require large trucks. Maariv says that leads to speculation that whomever took the "parts" had help from inside the base.
