Indigenous Chinese Helicopter Fires First Air-To-Air Missiles

Aircraft Reportedly Successfully Intercepted Low-Altitude Targets

China's indigenous WZ-10 attack helicopter has reportedly fired its first air-to-air missiles in a live fire drill last week.

The Economic Times of India relays a report from China's Xinhua news agency that the aircraft "successfully" engaged low-altitude targets with an unspecified weapon. The Chinese news service said that the successful test will mean an expanded role for the helicopter in "countering enemy aircraft."

The WZ-10 was first seen in public in 2012 at the 9th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition in the southern city of Zhuhai in Guangdong. The country is reportedly manufacturing more of its own military hardware rather than buying it from other countries as it improves its capabilities.

The drill was reportedly the country's largest-scale exercise for the study of combat tactics since China began increasing its number of forces dedicated to aviation activities.
