Nine Fatally Injured In Russian Cargo Plane Accident

Aircraft Went Down In Siberia, Impacting A Military Warehouse Complex

A Russian Antonov An-12 military cargo plane went down Thursday in Siberia, resulting in the fatal injury of all nine people on board, according to authorities.

The aircraft had departed from Novosibirsk in Siberia en route to Irkutsk, according to the online news source Euronews. There were six crew and three people accompanying the cargo on board.

The turboprop airplane was attempting to land at Irkutsk, according to a report appearing in the New York Daily News relayed from the Russian news network RT Novosti. The Russian news source said the plane was being repositioned from a factory in Novosibirsk to one near Irkutsk. The plane reportedly caught fire during an aborted landing attempt.

A source from Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations said "The An-12 came in for landing at low altitude and grazed military depot buildings 10 kilometers away from the landing strip, after which it crashed."

No one on the ground was injured, according to the report. An-12 aircraft first entered service in 1966, and production of the aircraft ended in 1973.

The Aviation Safety Network indicates that the plane was carrying 1.5 tons of spare parts for the factory in Irkutsk when it went down.
