Richard Rockefeller Fatally Injured In Aviation Accident

Was Piloting A Piper Meridian That Went Down Friday

Richard Rockefeller ... the 64-year-old son of the oldest living member of the Rockefeller family, has been fatally injured in an accident near the Westchester County, NY Airport (KPHN).

USA Today reports that Rockefeller had celebrated Thursday night with his 99-year-old father David for the elder Rockefeller's birthday. He had reportedly departed KPHN, located in White Plains, NY, en route to Portland, ME in his Piper Meridian about 0800 EDT Friday. The accident was reported about 10 minutes later less than three miles from the departure airport.

The family confirmed the accident. "It's a terrible tragedy," said family spokesman Fraser Seitel. "The family is in shock. Richard was a wonderful and cherished member of the family. He was an experienced pilot. He was a medical doctor, and it's horribly sad."

The weather at the time of the accident was reported to be foggy with some rain.
