Airborne 10.27.17: World Indoor Skydiving, Laptop Ban?, 767 Production

France walked away with a clutch of gold medals at the 2nd FAI World Indoor Skydiving Championships last week after putting in solid performances across a range of disciplines at the three-day competition in Laval, Canada.

More than 200 competitors from 23 countries converged on the SkyVenture wind tunnel near Montreal to compete in eight different classes of Indoor Skydiving. OK... this sounds like a nightmare... The ICAO will consider an FAA proposal to ban laptops in checked baggage on all international flights due to concerns about fires caused by lithium-ion batteries contained in the devices. The agency recently published a paper with results of testing that shows that when the batteries overheat, they can cause fires and explosions when packed with combustible materials like hairspray and dry shampoo. Such an explosion can put the entire aircraft at risk, depending on the aircraft, according to the report. Boeing is reportedly looking at the feasibility of doubling its production of 767 airliners in Everett, WA amid rumors that some major orders may be in the works. The planemaker is getting input from both employees and suppliers about their ability to deliver twice the number of airplanes as are currently coming off the line. While Boeing is officially mum on the report, there have been rumors that a major carrier ... United Continental is specifically mentioned ... may order between 50 to 100 of the airplanes. Boeing has not produced a passenger variant of the 767 for years. If the order comes through, it could provide work on the 767 production line for several years. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
