F-35s Delayed In Reporting To Eglin AFB

Program Managers Say More Time For Testing Needed

Eglin Air Force Base had been scheduled to receive its first F-35 Lightning II aircraft this month, but the Air Force quietly pushed that date back by about a year, according to officials.

JSF Program Office spokesman Joe DellaVedova told the Pensacola News-Journal that delay was due to additional modifications needed to the aircraft to support the flight testing. The first two F-35s are now set to be sent to Edwards Air Force Base in California in April, 2011, according to Eglin officials.

Eglin will eventually become a primary training center for JSF pilots and maintenance personnel. The 33rd Fighter Wing has been designated as a training unit, and the 59 aircraft which will be stationed there will be supported by 4,000 military personnel in Okaloosa County.

The Pentagon mandated the 13-month extension of the program, shifting nearly $3 billion from production funding to development.
