Quito, Ecuador Schedules Runway Maintenance

Maintenance Planned Well in Advance for Equatorial Aerodrome

Ecuador's Mariscal Sucre Quito International Airport has announced a few chunks of downtime for runway maintenance, describing some taxiway work and mainline repairs that will put the airport out of commission for windows in May, June, July, and September.

The maintenance work will cover more than 70,000 square meters of runway, helping to prevent emergency corrective work should existing wear and tear worsen in the future. Right now, they've scheduled a few windows: May 11th, May 18th; June 1st, July 6th, July 13th, July 20th, and September 7th,14th and 21st from 0200 hrs to 1200 hrs. A few more days have a different window, however, with June 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th seeing closures from 0200 hrs to 1400 hrs.

"The aerodrome closures have been coordinated and authorized by the General Directorate of Civil Aviation," Quiport Corporation, the airport's overseer, explained. "The airlines that operate at the Quito airport have already been informed of this need by Quiport and the DGAC through the respective NOTAM." The corp says that passengers planning a flight into Quito on the affected dates should already have their carriers touching base to clear up any issues already, but numbers and details can be found on their list of Quito attendees.

"Quiport will also carry out maintenance work on taxiways A and B, which will not affect air operations, but which, together with the work on the runway, are necessary to keep the airport facilities in optimal condition."
