BASE Jumper Fatally Injured In Utah

Witnesses Said He Opened His Chute Too Late To Arrest His Fall

An accident at a well-known BASE jumping location in Moab, UT has resulted in the fatal injury of a local jumper.

Daniel Moore jumped from a cliff above a state highway on Saturday at about 4:15 pm local time, according to witnesses. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that he was observed in an "unusual head-high position" and waving his hands in an effort to gain stability as he fell.

The witnesses said the 22-year-old jumper, described as "experienced", missed his first opportunity to open his parachute. Police say the chute eventually opened completely, but it was too late to slow Moore's fall and he impacted the ground. The paper reports that rescue crews took four and a half hours to reach him due to dangerous conditions created by a recent snowstorm.

The area is inside the Moab city limits, authorities say, and is a popular location for BASE jumpers to participate in the sport.
