Air Force investigators determined the instructor pilot using incorrect go-around procedures caused the Jan. 31 crash of a T-37B pilot training aircraft near Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas ("Texas-Based T-37 Crashes," 02-04-02, ANN).
The instructor pilot and a student pilot were killed in the crash.
The mishap occurred near Laughlin's T-37 auxiliary field when the pilots were flying the third dual mission in the training syllabus for specialized undergraduate pilot training.
The board determined the evidence indicated the instructor was flying the aircraft in the final turn for a touch-and-go landing. When asked by the runway supervisor if he had an aircraft performing a straight-in approach in sight, he said he did not and that he was going around and try the approach again.
While maneuvering at low altitude, the aircraft went into a descending right turn with the bank increasing steadily beyond the 45-degree maximum allowable in a final turn. As a result of the excessive bank angle combined with the final turn airspeed of 110 knots, the T-37 stalled, departing controlled flight with a rapid descending roll to the right. Because of the low altitude of the stall, the instructor pilot was unable to successfully recover the aircraft before crashing. Neither crewmember attempted to eject.
Brig. Gen. Peter U. Sutton, commander of the 12th Flying Training Wing, served as the accident investigation board president.
