FAA Issues Fuel Contamination Warning In The Central U.S.

Flameouts, Other Engine Operation Issues Have Been Noted

The FAA is currently investigating a fuel contamination problem that has recently appeared in jet fuel in the central U.S. The exact source and the geographical scope of the contamination is unknown.

There have been reports of blockages in fuel filters, fuel nozzles, and fuel tanks. This has resulted in several engine flameouts and other erratic engine operations.

All operators are advised to closely follow fuel sampling process and report any discovery of contamination or erratic engine operations to their flight standards district office or nearest faa facility.

According to the Defense Logistics Agency, two USAF aircraft refueled at Eppley Field (KOMA) in Omaha, NE  by the FBO Tac Air were forced to make emergency landings after being refueled on November 18. The FBO has been advised to stop refueling U.S. government aircraft until the issue is resolved.

NBAA Air Traffic Services posted a message to the Beechtalk bulletin board online that the situation appeared to be limited to KOMA, but questions should be directed to the Lincoln, NE FSDO.
