Airborne-Unmanned 04.09.19: DJI & LAFD, NAAA Cautions, False NZ Drone Report

Also: XPONENTIAL 2019, Triton Remotely Piloted Aircraft, Paul Duke STEM School, Schiebel

In an effort to create, test and deploy its UAS technology as an emergency response and preparedness tool, DJI has partnered with the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) to provide them with access to new technologies, training and support, so that the agency can utilize UAS technology as part of its operations.

The LAFD will continue to deploy and test DJI’s UAS technology for the fire and rescue service industry. Thus far, the LAFD has flown more than 175 incident-related missions using a variety of DJI’s platforms, including the Matrice 200 Series, Matrice 600 Series, and Phantom 4 Pro UAS. The National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA) is asking all UAS operators to be aware of agricultural aircraft operations this growing season. As UAS operators know, UAS are not allowed above 400 feet without an FAA waiver. However, UAS operators should also know agricultural aviators fly as low as 10 feet off the ground when making an application, meaning they share this low-altitude airspace with UAS. On March 29, 2018, a pilot and passenger departed Thames Aerodrome in New Zealand for a scenic flight. After flying for approximately 40 minutes, the pilot flew the aircraft over the open mine to the north of the town of Waihi. While both occupants were viewing the open mine at approximately 1600 feet MSL, and 80 knots, the windscreen failed catastrophically. When interviewed, the pilot reported a possible collision with a drone. Examination of the aircraft and searches of the area of the mine have found no such evidence. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-Unmanned!!!
