Austria Replacing Fleet With Leonardo M-346FA Aircraft

Filling Air Defense Gaps As Saab 105s Retire

Austria will replace its fleet of retired Saab 105 training aircraft with the Leonardo M-346FA advanced trainer and light fighter-attack multi-role jets, as confirmed by Austrian Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner on December 28, 2024.

The purchase is part of a government-to-government agreement with Italy, and it conforms with the recommendation of the Austrian General Staff. The deal also fits within the budget approved under the “ÖBH 2032+” defense plan approved in 2022.

The Austrian economy will benefit from the agreement as well, through a series of industrial offsets according to the Austrian Air Force.

Tanner made a point to emphasize that the acquisition will not only enable advanced pilot training but also address critical capability gaps in the Austrian Air Force and enhance air defense.

Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer said, “This cooperation is further proof of the good cooperation and friendship between Italy and Austria. My special thanks go to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who made a significant contribution to the conclusion of this agreement.”

Leonardo’s M-346FA is the Fighter Attack variant of the M-346 Master advanced trainer. It is a multi-role aircraft with seven external hardpoints for various equipment and munitions. Its top speed is Mach 1.15 with a range of 1,800 km (1,120 mi) and in addition to pilot training, it is a good option for close air support, tactical reconnaissance, and air policing, serving as a cost-effective solution for a modern air defense force.
