Palm Beach Sheriff's Office Dunks Drone

Dropped The Aircraft In The Intracoastal Waterway During A Training Exercise

The Palm Beach (FL) Sheriff's Office last year received a $1 million grant from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to establish a drone program, but one of its aircraft reportedly got dunked in the Intracoastal Waterway during a recent training exercise.

It was initially reported that the aircraft that went for a swim was a $180,000 unmanned helicopter purchased by the department, but PBSO spokeswoman Teri Barbera told the website www.gossipextra.com that the aircraft that actually wound up in the ICW was "a $1,000 drone we got from a hobby store to try out the system."

However, Barbera also told the site that their more expensive aircraft had also been crashed, but it was during a test flight and on dry land, not in the water. "We were not responsible for that," she said.

The PBSO established the drone program back in October for use in search and rescue operations, drug enforcement, and during natural disasters.
