Air War Over Philly Hub

Southwest to Invade; US Airways Vows Defensive War

Southwest Airlines, always on the lookout for potentially-profitable routes, has set its sights on Philadelphia, principal hub of US Airways. The low-cost giant announced that its route system will include the City of Brotherly Love [LUV?] next May.

Philadelphia will be the first new city added to Southwest's system since late 2001, when Norfolk (VA) was signed on.

US Airways CEO David Siegel (right) was quoted as saying that Southwest is making a "direct assault on our principal hub." He said he plans "to stand and fight" with his airline, to maintain the lion's share of that market.

Philadelphia travelers can expect to start paying less for their tickets, on certain routes, starting in May; and they can expect to see more perqs from their hometown airline, as US Airways shores up its customer base in the coming months.
