FAA Announces $1.9 Billion In AIP Grants

Additional $269 Million For Supplemental Discretionary Grants

The FAA announced on September 6 the distribution of $1.9 billion in 519 grants for airports in 48 states, Guam, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands under the Airport Improvement Program.

The announcement represents the fifth tranche of grant funding by the agency this year and the largest announcement in the history of the program. Funds will be used on a broad range of projects including safety, sustainability, and noise reduction.

For the first time ever, funding is included for development and testing of technologies to reduce, mitigate, and remove contaminants caused by the use of polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) used in some firefighting foam formulations.

In addition, $269 million in Supplemental Discretionary Grants will be going to 62 projects at 55 airports.

These funds are for development of resilient airport infrastructure improvements and for handling and distribution of sustainable aviation fuels, air quality improvement, and energy and emissions sustainability projects.

FAA Associate Administrator for Airports Shannetta R. Griffin, P.E. said, “Today, we invest in our future – enhancing safety, improving sustainability and ensuring our infrastructure meets the needs of the traveling public. This funding helps ensure traveler safety, reduces the environmental impacts on communities, and builds more resilient airports nationally.”

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg said, “...The grants we’re announcing today will improve airfield operations for dozens of airports and help ensure the U.S. retains its global leadership in aviation.”
