International Industry Group Aims for 100% SAF Across the Board

Volunteer Association to Share, Collaborate as Industry Heads Into the Future

The International Aerospace Environmental Group (IAEG) has published an open release showing off a host of companies that have committed to evaluating pure, 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel across the board.

The IAEG saw its sentiments quickly echoed by Boeing - the lead of the project - and its 'deputy lead' Airbus, who backed its assertion that team members will coordinate their 100% SAF testing efforts for voluntary and unilateral consideration and use by WG 13 members. That should help move things along with a quick measure of standardization without needing any government bodies to nanny things along, if everyone plays nice, that is.

Sustainable Fuels remain the biggest key to the industry's safety and health in the face of increasing environmental regulations, and everything from the tiny 2-seaters puttering around the patch to the eye-poppingly expensive private jets and their cattle-car widebody siblings will be in on the SAF fun in no time at all.

The IAEG has designated a unifying body in Work Group 13, a team that will "support consistent communication with external stakeholders and educate infrastructure partners and suppliers on what is needed to ensure operational readiness for 100% SAF." Included in that roster, from the sound of things, is a handful of the industry's big names like GE Aerospace, Dassault Aviation, Pratt & Whitney, Rolls-Royce, and Safran along with the aforementioned leadership. Smaller, lesser-known groups round out the rest of Work Group 13, evidently too small to be of much note when making the IAEG's big announcement.

“This collaboration will help prepare the broader aviation ecosystem for 100% SAF capabilities, as part of the aviation industry goal of achieving net zero CO2 emissions by 2050,” said Ryan Faucett, Boeing Vice President of Environmental Sustainability and IAEG Board Member. “We will share our findings from our SAF compatibility and ground-breaking jet reference fluids research and continue to collaborate with this Work Group to support a more sustainable aviation future, together.”

"Achieving up to 100% SAF capability for commercial and military aircraft fleets will require a high level of industry collaboration,” said Dr. Bruno Costes, Airbus Senior Director of Institutional Relations and Standardisation and IAEG Chair. “Airbus will bring its knowledge and experience from years of 100% SAF demonstration flights, coupled with our technical expertise in developing new fuel standards. SAF will be a key enabler for the decarbonisation of the sector by 2050."
