SmartSky to Offer Encrypted In-Flight Streaming

Joint Effort With IdeaNova Will See DRM, Secured Video Feeds

SmartSky Networks has announced its work with joint partner IdeaNova Technologies to offer secure streaming and digital rights management tech aboard aircraft in-flight following successful testing and rollout. The change will see IdeaNova's Intouch and Inplay services available through scalable coding and encryption.

IdeaNova's applications provide à la carte media selections and video teleconferencing geared towards airborne consumption. While media consumption has little need for ironclad encryption and security, private video calls and meetings require higher standards of guaranteed privacy. The Inplay platform offers a flexible portal that can be customized for the entertainment demands of the airline, fleet, corporate, or individual operator. In addition to streaming content, the app also provides live television options for business operators on the SmartSky Network.

The effort combines the best of both outfits, combining SmartSky's very low latency network and interoperable service layer with IdeaNova's proprietary IFE tech to provide flexible data offerings perfect for any operation. In flight connectivity has gained even more importance since 2020, as the world increasingly leans on virtual workspaces, remote labor, and internet availability.

For operators reliant upon courting customer favor, inadequate comms provision could be the decisive factor in gaining long-term brand loyalty.

Chief tech officer at SmartSky, David Claassen, says the duo will give customers an internet experience just like the one they have at home. “Data is at the heart of everything we do at SmartSky.  Integrating with technology providers like IdeaNova expands the capability and interoperability of the SmartSky connectivity platform, giving SmartSky customers more choices for using high-bandwidth applications at 35,000 ft with the same quality and security they would experience on the ground.”
