Pilot In Alaska Otter Accident Lost Son-In-Law In July C-17 Crash

Military Airlifter Went Down During Training At Elmendorf Air Base

The pilot of the DeHavilland Otter which went down Monday night in Alaska had recently lost his son-in-law in another aircraft accident last month.

Theron "Terry" Smith was piloting the Otter on a flight to an Alaska fishing camp when it went down, fatally injuring Smith, former senator Ted Stevens, and three others. But adding to the Smith family's tragedy was the loss of Aaron Malone, the pilot's son-in-law, in an accident involving a C-17 at Elmendorf Air Base in July. Malone had met Melanie Smith, Terry's daughter, at the University of Alaska. That July 28th accident killed three other airmen.

The Alaska Dispatch reports that friends and colleagues are describing Smith as "a pilot's pilot" who was "the most skilled aviator imaginable" and "totally cautious" when flying in poor weather, which is common in Alaska. Smith was a lifelong pilot, having been at one time Alaska Airline's chief pilot in the state.
