Aero-TV: Turbine-Powered Velocity Twin Makes it to SUN ‘n FUN

High-Performance Aircraft Flies With Twin PBS TP100 Turboprops

Velocity Aircraft’s twin-engine speed machine, the V-Twin, is being taken to new heights with the integration of PBS Aerospace TP100 turboprop engines. It took its first flight on March 25 before making it down to Lakeland, Florida, for the annual SUN ‘n FUN aerospace expo.

The original V-Twin prototype has been flying since March 2012. It is already considered a high-performance aircraft, typically using two 160 horsepower Lycoming IO-320s. With this selection of piston engines, the aircraft can cruise at up to 250 knots and fly for a maximum of 1900 nautical miles at a time.

Now, twelve years after the aircraft initially hit the market, Velocity is giving the V-Twin even more to brag about with the introduction of PBS Aerospace TP100 turboprops. The turbine-powered V-Twin took its maiden flight on March 25, then went up a few more times before heading out to SUN ‘n FUN.

“There's still some concern on the first landing, but it was nothing,” Scott Swing, President of Velocity Aircraft. “We really had no issues.”

So far, the turbine-powered variant tops out at around 250 knots. It is expected to get a maximum speed of 300 knots in the future, making it an extremely powerful bird for its weight.
