Boeing Hands Out New Layoff Notices To 900 Workers

Machinists Among Nearly Latest To Lose Their Jobs At Planemaker

As part of its effort to slash 10,000 jobs companywide this year, on Friday Boeing handed out a new round of layoff notices... advising 900 employees they would no longer have jobs 60 days from now.

The Seattle Times reports roughly 600 workers from that group are from Boeing's Commercial Airplanes unit, including 458 members of the Machinists union... which, as ANN reported, struck the company for 59 days last year. The layoff notices coincided with the last day for about 190 workers who received 60-day notices in January, in the first wave of monthly layoffs announced by the company.

So far, Boeing has laid off around 2,700 workers companywide, with the vast majority of those layoffs around Seattle and in the Puget Sound region. Approximately 1,400 of those positions have been in the Commercial Airplanes unit.

The planemaker has also laid off hundreds of contract workers, reports the Times. Other positions have been cut through attrition and retirements.
