Lufthansa Pilot Reports Close Call With A UAV

Aircraft Was On Approach To KLAX When The Incident Occurred

A Lufthansa pilot said a UAV passed within 200 feet of his Airbus A380 while on approach to KLAX on Friday.

The pilot said that the drone passed about 200 feet over his aircraft while on approach to KLAX at about 5,000 feet of altitude. The pilot did not take evasive action, and FAA spokesman Ian Gregor told Reuters that the plane landed normally a few minutes later.

The number of passengers and crew on board was not reported.

Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA) used the incident to bolster support for legislation she has introduced to require additional safety features on UAVs. She says that the small aircraft pose a significant hazard to the commercial airline industry.
