Alaska Accident Was A Suicide, Family Says

Pilot's Wife Worked In Building That Was Impacted By The Airplane

The pilot of a Cessna 172 belonging to the Civil Air Patrol committed suicide when he flew the airplane into the side of a building December 29th, according to members of his family.

Fox News reports that pilot Doug Demarest's wife worked at a law firm with offices in the building that was struck by the airplane. Family spokeswoman Jhana Lindermuth is managing partner of the law firm Dorsey & Whitney, where Katherine Demarest also works. Lindermuth would not say how the family knew that knew that Doug Demarest had committed suicide, and asked that the media and others respect the family's privacy.

According to a report in the Anchorage Dispatch News, emergency responders had been called to the Demarest's home on Monday responding to a person threatening suicide.

The FBI had released a statement that would only confirm that there was no indication that the crash was a terrorist act.

Demarest had joined the Civil Air Patrol about five years ago, but authorities say he was not authorized to fly the plane that impacted the building.
