New Avflight FBO Breaks Ground At Detroit City Airport

Latest Milestone In Coleman Young Airport’s Rejuvenation

Avflight announced the groundbreaking of its new state-of-the-art FBO at Coleman A. Young International Airport (KDET) in Detroit, Michigan. The start of this project represents the latest significant milestone in the historic airport’s revitalization, aimed at strengthening the aviation infrastructure in Detroit as well as stimulating economic growth.

Attending the ceremony were dignitaries including Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, Councilman Scott Benson, Airport Director Jason Watt, Avflight VP of Operations Joe Meszaros, and Avflight VP of Finance and Treasurer Garrett Hain. All of whom gave remarks to the attendees to highlight the important part this development plays in advancing the city’s vision for both the airport and the surrounding community.

Avflight’s Meszaros said, "With its proximity to the city’s business district and automotive industry, this new general aviation terminal will serve as a gateway to commerce, tourism and opportunity. It will stand as a beacon of growth, job creation and educational opportunity for Detroit citizens."

Meszaros added, “"Today’s groundbreaking celebrates more than just bricks and mortar—it symbolizes renewed momentum for Coleman A. Young International Airport. With Avflight’s partnership and the city's ongoing investments, KDET is poised to become a world-class gateway that drives economic vitality and provides broad opportunities for our community.”

The multimillion-dollar investment by Avflight reaffirms the company’s long-term commitment to the City of Detroit’s future. The modern facility will include a 5,000 square foot terminal, a 20,000 square foot heated hangar, and an attached 1,440 square foot parking garage. The FBO will serve general aviation aircraft with fuel and ground handling services.

Recent significant improvements at KDET included a $3.5 million runway renovation, LED taxi light upgrades. Upcoming projects will be improvements to the ramp pavement, a new EMAS or engineered material arresting system, upgraded snow removal equipment, and airport beautification elements.

Meszaros said, "We’re excited to deepen our roots here in Detroit. Our commitment extends beyond aviation services—it’s about investing in people, community partnerships and Detroit’s bright future."
