Drug 'War' Claims Another US Victim in South America

Pilot Dies While Spraying Colombian 'Crops'

Another setback for US drug interdiction and intervention policies was reported over the weekend, as an otherwise-unidentified US citizen of Costa Rican heritage was killed while reportedly poisoning coca plants in Colombia.

Early reports that the plane might have been the target of narco-gunfire appear to have been unsubstantiated: "Initially, there was talk of the plane's being hit [by gunfire], but then those who went to the site said there were no [bullet holes]. We are not sure what caused the accident," said Colombia's Defense Minister, Marta Lucia Ramirez (pictured).

Conflicting information:

Although the pilot was supposedly spraying at the time of the accident, local reports also said the weather at the time was, "bad."

Colombia's government has long been threatened by leftist forces, who are said to achieve their primary financing through their cultivation and distribution of the illegal crops.
