Dream Job? AOPA Looking For New Exec VP (Media and Public Relations)

AOPA tells ANN that it is seeking to fill the newly developed position of Vice President, Media and Public Relations. Working closely with the Executive VP of Communications, this position will be responsible for managing AOPA's overall positioning and image to its members, the aviation community and the general public. They will direct all appropriate communications channels to assure that AOPA's message reaches all appropriate media.

AOPA's new EVP of Communications, Jeff Myers, said, "This is a fast-paced, highly demanding job. For starters, the successful candidate will have to stay up with (ideally, but not likely, ahead of) the most exciting person in GA - Phil Boyer. So we're looking for a GA pro, someone who can hit the ground running. This is not an "earn-while-you-learn job."

Additional responsibilities for this position include fielding all media and speaking requests, coordinating interviews and news conferences, managing the highly successful Pilot Town Meetings program and serving as a key strategic advisor to AOPA's senior leadership team.

As far as qualifications, AOPA is looking for a degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or similar field with emphasis on management and communication. A Master's degree is preferred. Experience should be at least 7-10 years of communications and/or public relations management and planning. Broad GA knowledge and communications experience are a must, preferably with depth in media relations, issues management and crises communications. Additionally, this person must come with a solid network of mid- to senior-level aviation contacts.

"Of course we're looking for someone who can write well as this is a hands-on job," said Myers. "The person must be fast on their feet with a sensitivity to issues and a strong sense of how to shape and form topics to our membership and public.

The job is located at AOPA's headquarters in Frederick, MD. "It's a great area to bring up a family. Housing is still reasonable, schools and shopping are great," said Myers.

FMI: Qualified candidates can express their interest in the job by emailing their resume to hr@aopa.org.
