Cessna 182 Down: South Carolina

Three Dead

A Cessna 182 carrying three people from Aiken Municipal Airport in North Augusta (SC) to Greenville (MS) crashed Monday, killing all on board.

Workers and residents of a nursing home near the crash site, about a mile from the Savannah River, saw the aircraft in apparent distress as it passed low overhead.

"The engine was sputtering," said Kevin Ginn, chief operating officer for the Anne Maria Rehab and Nursing Center.

A half-dozen workers from the home ran to the crash site and tried to open the aircraft doors, but were unable to do so before emergency workers arrived. The plane went down in a heavily wooded area. The cause of the accident isn't yet known.

A check of the FAA registry shows the aircraft was registered to William C. Cuntz of Golden (CO).
