Boeing: Don't Count 737 MAX Out Against A320neo

Wojick Says Fight For Market Share Has Just Begun

When you compare the order books, Airbus's A320neo has a fairly substantial lead over Boeing's 737 MAX in the newest horse race in the single aisle market. To date, Airbus has orders for 1,342 more A320neos than Boeing has for its re-engined 737.

But the message from John Wojick, Boeing's senior vice president of global sales and marketing, said that the fight for market share in that segment is just beginning.

In an interview with the Seattle Business Journal, Wojick admitted that Airbus has sold more airplanes, "but at this point in time, I'm not concerned about it."

Wojick said that they have signed up 26 customers for the 737 MAX, and there are over 300 that are currently operating the 737. Many airlines have not yet made a decision about what they'll buy for fleet replacement.

"It's going to be a 20-year program at least," Wojick said, "so we've got a long time to play this game out."

Both airplanes are selling well. Boeing has orders for 3,072 737 MAX airplanes, which is a record for a Boeing plane that has not yet left the ground for the first time.
