SpaceX Drops Plans For Reusable Falcon 9 Second Stage

Will Turn Attention To More Rapid Development Of The 'BFR'

SpaceX has apparently re-thought its plans to make the second stage of the Falcon 9 reusable in favor of accelerating development of its Big Falcon Rocket ... known in the company as the BFR.

Engadget reports that SpaceX Founder Elon Musk announced the change of plans in a tweet. "BTW, SpaceX is no longer planning to upgrade Falcon 9 second stage for reusability. Accelerating BFR instead. New design is very exciting! Delightfully counter-intuitive," he said responding to question posted on the social media platform.

Musk did not say how long it would take the company to implement the new design. After the first launch of a BFR earlier this year, he said he was hoping for orbital launches by 2020.

Musk said on Twitter that no upgrades are currently planned for the Falcon 9 rocket. "Minor tweaks to improve reliability only, provided NASA & USAF are supportive," he Tweeted.
