EASA Issues Emergency AD For Certain Rotax Engines

Escalation Of Alert Service Bulletin From Rotax

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency issued an Emergency Airworthiness Directive (AD) for certain Rotax engines installed on various general aviation aircraft.

Rotax previously notified owners of such aircraft about the issue through its own Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) in December 2024.

This AD represents an escalation from actions recommended in the ASB to mandatory corrective actions that must be accomplished. It applies to all models and all serial numbers of the following Rotax engines: 912 iSc Sport, 915 iSc A, 915 iSc C24, 916 iSc A, 916 iSC B, and 916 iSc C24 series.  

The original reason for the ASB and now this AD, is that the production line reported a deviation in manufacturing that caused an excessive amount of LOCTITE has been applied at the sprag clutch housing and/or oil spray nozzle of the affected engines.

This may lead to blockage of the oil nozzle and possibly leading to inadequate cooling and damage to both generators.

If this condition is not detected and corrected, an in-flight engine shutdown could occur and cause a forced landing with potential damage to the aircraft and injuries to occupants.

Corrective Actions:

  • Repetitive operational checks to ensure availability of the battery backup function
  • Inspection of the oil spray nozzle and generator stator assembly
  • If any discrepancy is detected, contact BRP-Rotax for repair instructions
  • If the inspection reveals either of the parts are unserviceable, one or both MUST be replaced prior to the next flight.
