Flight Expo Says Providing Today’s Youth An Exciting Hands-On Learning Experience Helps Them Prepare For The Future
Apart from preserving historical aircraft, the Flight Expo website says their mission is to inspire and educate the next generation of engineers, pilots, and aircraft mechanics. Flight Expo has now partnered with Build A Plane so students can do just that…build a plane. Flight Expo says by engaging today’s youth in an exciting hands-on learning experience we are giving them the skills and confidence to create bigger and brighter futures for themselves and our communities.
Build A Plane is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization working in partnership with the Federal Aviation Administration and many other organizations to promote aviation and aerospace education.
Build A Plane solicits aircraft donations then regifts those aircraft to schools. Aircraft donors are given tax receipts for their charitable contribution of aircraft, and Build A Plane gives these aircraft to schools and qualified non-profits at no charge. Donated aircraft range from the simplest kit aircraft to larger, multi-engine type certificated planes. Once an aircraft is donated, it becomes property of the school and Build A Plane has no further claim to that airplane.
According to their website, they started the Build A Plane program in the beginning of October and have had great success. Students are currently building a KitFox airplane and a Mini 500 helicopter, both of which have been donated to the organization.
However, as a small 501(c)(3) non-profit that runs solely off of volunteers and limited resources, their biggest challenge is funding. Monies raised go toward tools and materials such as drills, sandpaper, aluminum, fiberglass, epoxy, and any other supplies necessary to complete the program.
