Aero-TV At SnF21: Diamond’s DA62 -- A 21st Century Transportation System

Modern Multi-Engine 7 Seater Is Currently The Pinnacle of GA Tech

Outside of the glider industry, no other aircraft line makes as much use of geometry and its attendant love affair with curves as Diamond Aircraft. And possibly the Pinnacle of all their efforts, is their 7 seat DA62, an aircraft that is poised to rewrite the rules as to how general aviation aircraft are transforming Personal Transportation.

I wanted to fly the aircraft for a while, but circumstances evaded me. But to say the least, even a short flight outside Lakeland during the Sun n Fun 2021 Aerospace Expo, was enough to convince me that the DA62 is something else altogether. This jet-fuel powered twin-engine aircraft is the result of decades of inspired aircraft design and benefited greatly from their previous foray into the twin-engine world with the DA42.

Despite IFR conditions and serious traffic issues, we clawed out a bit of airspace in which to give the DA62 a quick check, with the intention to do something more exhaustive at a later date. Still; during high-speed cruise at 6500 feet, followed by some slow flight and single engine work, the DA62 left a heckuva impression about its great manners, solid single-engine performance and an exceedingly well-designed cockpit/flight deck that showed that Diamond wanted to build the ultimate GA transport... and even when compared to those aircraft that often attempt to claim that crown for themselves. The DA62 pretty much puts them all to shame. Come along for a ride with ANN’s Chief Test Pilot, Jim Campbell, to see why we have such a sterling impression of Diamond’s DA62.
