Sweetheart Deal: Premier Aviation Gets One-Dollar Rent Package

Was Supposed To Have Been Tied To Education Program, Jobs

MRO company Premier Aviation got a great deal on hangar rental from the city of Windsor, Canada. The company will pay just one dollar per year for the next three years for its hangar space at Windsor Airport.

But at least one member of the City Council says that he'd like to turn back the clock, knowing what he knows now. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reports that Councillor Alan Halberstadt had filed a Freedom of Information request after being questioned about the deal by some of his constituents. When he got all of the details, he said that the city took a big risk with the lease package.

At the time the deal was made, there were discussions between Premier and St. Clair College about an aviation training program ... which has now been put on hold. Halberstadt said the program was a major factor in his voting for the lease package. He said had he known it was going to be put on the back burner at best, "I certainly would have given it second thoughts."

Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis said Premier was supposed to have created 175 jobs as part of the deal, but it is not clear how many people have actually gone to work for the company.
