Boeing Cuts New Group

Replacing Company's Support Folk With Outsourced Labor

Boeing handed out 60-day layoff notices to some 225 workers, mostly in Bellevue (WA), late last week.

The workers are not part of Boeing's announced 10,000 headcount reduction plan, which was set to weed out production-worker ranks; the workers are part of Boeing's Shared Services group, which provides 'office services,' such as travel coordination, some security functions, and copying and printing, to other Boeing units.

The work will be handled by temps, and by outside contractors such as Oce USA, which, we're told, will be doing a lot of the formerly in-house printing.

Part of the trouble that is now being addressed may have arisen from the delays inherent in moving the biggest paper-generator, headquarters, away from Washington state two years ago. Part of it may be the general slowdown in Boeing's business.
