Second A380 Into The Air

Another Test Bed Plies The Skies Over Europe

Airbus's second A380 super-jumbo jet took off without a problem Tuesday morning, laden with test equipment and powered by four Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines.

The maiden flight of MSN004 began at 1049 local time as the aircraft lifted off from Toulouse, France. Its instrumentation will gauge the performance of the engines and systems on board as the aircraft pushes the edge of the flight envelope over the next several months.

Airbus plans to deliver its first production model of the A380, capable of carrying 550 passengers in three different cabin classes, in just a year.

The first prototype, MSN001, has logged more than 365 flight hours in approximately 105 flights since it was launched earlier this year. Airbus now has 159 firm orders for the aircraft and company executives say they're having trouble keeping up with demand.
