Drone Pilot Arrested For Leaflet Drop

Flew Over Two Football Stadiums In California In Anti-Media Protest

A man has been arrested for using a drone to drop anti-media leaflets over two NFL games on Sunday. The aircraft was operated over Levi's Stadium in San Francisco during the 49ers-Seattle Seahawks game, and then again over the Coliseum stadium in Oakland, CA where the Denver Broncos were playing the Raiders.

Fox News reports that the suspect, who has not been identified by authorities, was motivated by "something about free speech and his belief that television stations are corrupt,” according to Santa Clara Police Lt. Dan Moreno.

The operator allegedly broke several laws relating to drone flights. Both stadiums are within five miles of an airport, which makes the flights a violation of FAA regulations. Drones are also prohibited from flying over people without an express waiver from the FAA. The police chief said he allegedly violated local ordinances regulating drone flights.

An investigation into the incident has been opened by federal and state authorities, including the FBI, according to the report.

Meanwhile, most of the literature did not reach its intended audience. It was carried by the wind away from the stadiums after being released from the aircraft.
