Less Room Throughout Coach

What Goes Up Must Come Down; This Time, It's Legroom

Leisure passengers, at least, would rather have lower ticket prices than a couple inches' more legroom. That's what American Airlines has figured out.

After a couple years' touting its "More Legroom Throughout Coach™" campaign, the world's largest airline will be adding seats on 140 of its 757s and on its 34 Airbus A300s. Two extra rows of seats will decrease the distance from seatback to seatback (called, "pitch"), by one to four inches, depending on the models compared.

MD-80s, which had also received the "stretch-out" treatment, are unaffected, at least for now.

The modifications will start into place this Fall, beginning with airliners that are used on heavily-traveled "vacation" routes. "Business" routes may not get the extra seats at all; it depends on how things shake out for the airline, over the next few months to a year.
