Two Fatally Injured In SNJ-4 Accident

Both On Board Were Retired Commercial Pilots

A restored Navy SNJ-4 trainer went down Tuesday about a mile from takeoff from a private airport community. The two men on board were both retired commercial pilots, and neighbors in the community said one, Jim Crowley, was planning to buy the SNJ-4 from another person in the community, Rodney Richardson. All lived at the air park.

Witnesses said that the airplane "was sputtering" shortly after takeoff. Television station KIRO reports that one witness, Scott Moody, said he saw the plant attempt a "big turn, trying to get back to the airstrip ... and it went down really fast."

While those on board were identified by neighbors to the station, they have not been officially identified by local authorities.

The plane went down in a heavily-wooded area west of Buckley, WA. The impact caused both wings to separate from the fuselage of the airplane. There was reportedly no post-impact fire.
